Accidental Death of an Anarchist description

About Accidental Death of an Anarchist

It raised the rafters at the Lyric Hammersmith. Now the latest iteration of the classic Italian play Accidental Death of an Anarchist is transferring to the West End for summer 2023, with previews at Theatre Royal Haymarket from 12th June. It opens on 26th June and runs until 9th September for a strictly limited season.

Tom Basden has cleverly adapted the original play by Dario Fo and Franca Rame, giving it a modern London setting. The media are on board and loving it, with the Daily Mail calling it a ‘fierce farce to make the Met squirm’. The Reviews Hub concurs, calling Daniel Rigby ‘beyond fantastic’. What's On Stage says you can expect ‘glorious chaos’ and Metro praises it as a ‘British state-of-the-nation satire that simply must not be missed’. Broadway World completes an exciting picture, calling it ‘rocket-paced, deeply political and utterly hilarious’.

If you’re sensitive or easily shocked, bear this in mind: there’s smoke, haze, strobe lighting, flash lights, blinder lights, very loud music and noisy, sudden sound effects. There’s more – it also comes with ‘themes or references’ that some people find upsetting or unsettling. Can you handle it? If you’re over 14 years old, you’re very welcome.

What's the story of Accidental Death of an Anarchist?

So what’s the plot? An anarchist falls to his death from a police station window four floors up. But was he actually pushed? The police are keen to investigate but when an unhinged showman, known only as the Maniac, is arrested, chaos ensues. He’s delighted to be able to put on a show and the resulting recreation of the police’s version of events exposes it as ridiculous, a farce rich in cover-ups, corruption and profound idiocy. The Italian police are in free-fall, not unlike today’s Met, and the result is a razor-sharp satire that bites.

Tom Basden has recreated a wickedly hilarious adaptation. Did you know it’s based on the truth? In a scandalous real-life incident from 1969 the anarchist Giuseppe Pinelli died when he fell from the fourth-floor window of the police station where he was being interrogated about the terrorist bomb attack that killed 17 in Milan.
