An Enemy of the People description

About An Enemy of the People

Imagine this. You make a worrying discovery that affects the health and livelihood of the people in the town where you live. You do the right thing, telling the people in charge what’s happening. But their self-interest means you’re ignored, lambasted, and dismissed as a troublemaker. This is one of Henrik Ibsen’s most rebellious plays, and this is what happens to the lead character Dr. Stockmann.

Dr. Thomas Stockmann is the medical officer of a new spa in a small town. At a dinner party hosted by Stockmann and his wife, a guest asks Stockmann about an article he’s written about the towen’s prestigious baths. When Dr. Stockmann's daughter brings a letter containing the lab test results, which confirm the doctor’s suspicions that the spa water is contaminated with bacteria, those with the most to lose don’t want to listen. Will the truth be heard – or will the baths stay open despite the risk? As so often happens in real life, Dr Stockman ends up reviled for revealing an uncomfortable truth that nobody wants to hear.

Bearing in mind the dismal antics of the UK’s privatised water companies, this 1882 play still resonates just as strongly today, in a world where the inconvenient truth is often hidden by those who have a stake in keeping things the way they are. Like all Ibsen’s work this play is bold, critical, brave, and caused outrage in the 1800s when it was first staged. The show will run at the Duke of York's Theatre for two months from 6th February.
