Austentatious description
About the Show
Each performance opens with the company taking title suggestions from the audience and drawing one at random. Six performers in Regency costume then improvise an entire Jane Austen novel around that title, accompanied by live music. Nothing is scripted and nothing repeats, so the show exists only for the length of that one performance. Past titles have included Bath to the Future and Mansfield Shark.
The show started in 2011, transferred to the West End in 2017 and has held a weekly residency at the Vaudeville Theatre since 2025. It won the Chortle Award for Best Character, Improv or Sketch Act in 2014 and has recorded two shows for BBC Radio 4.
Cast and Creatives
There is no writer or director in the conventional sense. Austentatious is devised and performed by its own company, founded by members of The Oxford Imps: Amy Cooke-Hodgson, Graham Dickson, Cariad Lloyd, Joseph Morpurgo, Andrew Hunter Murray and Rachel Parris.
Six of the nine company members perform at any given show. Rachel Parris is known for The Mash Report and Live at the Apollo, Cariad Lloyd for QI and Inside No. 9, and Graham Dickson for After Life. Joseph Morpurgo is an Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee. Charlotte Gittins, Daniel Nils Roberts and Lauren Shearing complete the company.
Why You Should Watch It
It is an evening of Regency comedy that has never been performed before and will never be performed again. Book tickets for Austentatious at the Vaudeville Theatre.
