The Picture of Dorian Gray description

About The Picture of Dorian Gray

Star of Succession, The Dressmaker, Pieces of a Woman and The Master Builder at the West End’s Old Vic, Sarah Snook makes a brilliant job of this gripping, witty and thoroughly modern adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s only novel.

Expect a ground-breaking production whose unique blend of live performance and video has been called a “dizzyingly beautiful tour de force” by The Guardian, and is already being billed as “the theatrical event of the year”. On stage for a strictly limited run at London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket for 12 weeks, the drama begins on Tuesday 23rd January 2024 and runs until 13th April.

This is the UK premiere of a play that caused a huge stir Down Under, brought to the stage by an all-Australian creative team. It first took to the stage in Sydney, where it attracted a host of well-deserved five star reviews. Since then it has enjoyed two sell-out seasons, also in Sydney, before touring to take in the Adelaide Festival, Arts Centre Melbourne, and Auckland Arts Festival. It scored multiple awards at the 2022 Sydney Theatre Awards and 2023 Green Room Awards, including Best Production and Best Director for Kip Williams. The London season is presented by Michael Cassel Group and Kindred Partners.

Snook’s acting career is varied and exciting. The critically-acclaimed 2018 performance she gave in Sydney Theatre Company’s Saint Joan saw her rise to stardom, and a fantastic run opposite Ralph Fiennes in Old Vic Theatre’s The Master Builder in 2016 sealed the deal. Worldwide recognition followed her seminal role as Shiv in HBO’s TV series Succession, already a classic of its time.

What's the story of The Picture of Dorian Gray?

Good quality cheap tickets for The Picture of Dorian Gray deliver you to a strange and spooky world where a deal with the devil sees a beautiful, vain young man sell his soul to stay gorgeous for eternity. Up in the attic, a painting of him ages and rots as the man himself stays ever-youthful. This is the Irish writer Oscar Wilde’s only novel, first published in 1891 and disliked by shocked critics at the time. These days it’s respected as a classic gothic horror story, and it has a lot to say about today’s ongoing obsession with youth.
