Equus description
Equus is a powerful 1973 play by Peter Shaffer, turned into an equally popular 1977 movie of the same name. It explores the story of a child psychiatrist tasked with treating a young man who has a pathological religious fascination with horses, inspired by a true story. The magic of Equus unfolds again, this time on stage at the Menier Chocolate Factory, a brilliantly disturbing plot that never ages. The workings of the human psyche, spirituality, religious obsessions, and sexual attraction are the name of the game as Psychiatrist Martin Dysart tries to decode what drives his seventeen year old patient Alan Strang. But will the cure be more dangerous than the crime?
Psychological conflict, the nature of insanity, cultural issues, questions about personal values, the expectations of society, the nature of mental illness, and more are the themes in this extraordinary piece of work. Director Lindsay Posner (Amadeus), a West End legend in his own lifetime, is working in co-production with Theatre Royal Bath, where the play transfers after its London run, to bring us a famously intriguing, award-winning play hailed as a modern masterpiece. Equus tickets take you to a strange world whose appeal hasn't faded more than five decades after it was written.
