About Hairspray
Hairspray is one of those magical feel-good musicals that leaves you feeling really, truly happy. It first hit the stage on Broadway in 2002 and won an impressive eight Tony Awards out of 13 nominations the year after. It was adapted into a musical movie in 2007. In 2007 it also arrived on stage in the West End starring Michael Ball as Edna Turnblad. Directed by Jack O'Brien and starring Mel Smith, Tracie Bennett and Leanne Jones, it broke records at the Shaftesbury theatre with 11 Olivier nominations, winning Oliviers for Best Musical, and Best Actor and Actress in a musical. Now it's back in town and Michael Ball stars, along with Paul Merton.
What's the story of Hairspray?
Roll back time to 1962. The setting is Baltimore and young Tracy Turnblad, a resident of the city, is a very big girl with even bigger hair. She has a dream, and that dream involves dancing her way to fame and fortune, via national TV, from where she will fall straight into the arms of the one she loves, teen idol Link Larkin. The Corny Collins Show offers her the opportunity she's been waiting for, and Tracy fast becomes a local star. Deciding to use her fame for good, she sets out to achieve equality and steal Link's heart.
Who is starring in Hairspray?
The wonderful Michael Ball, with his gorgeous voice, is the star of the show, reprising his brilliant role as Edna Turnblad. His West End debut in 1985 saw him playing Marius Pontmercy in the original London production of Les Misérables, after which he found a role as Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera. He stars alongside the hilarious star of Have I Got News For You and many top class BBC Radio 4 comedies Paul Merton, who plays Edna's husband Wilbur for many, but not all, of the performances.
Who is on the Hairspray creative team?
The show comes fresh from the original award-winning creative team director Jack O’Brien and choreographer Jerry Mitchell. The music is by Marc Shaiman and the lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The book comes from Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan.
