About Hairspray

Hairspray is a Tony Award-winning musical playing at the New Wimbledon Theatre. Based on John Waters' 1988 film and set in 1960s Baltimore, it's a feel-good celebration of individuality, acceptance and unstoppable pop-fuelled joy — winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical.

What's the story of Hairspray?

Set in 1962 Baltimore, the show follows big-hearted teenager Tracy Turnblad, who dreams of dancing on a local TV pop show. When she lands her big break, Tracy uses her overnight fame to challenge the status quo — fighting to integrate the show and bring her city together, all while chasing love and stardom to a soundtrack of irresistible 1960s hits.

Hairspray features music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, and a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters.
