Harry Clarke description

About Harry Clarke

Your venue is the Ambassadors Theatre, home to a much anticipated show described as wickedly funny. Harry Clarke transfers to the West End from March, having clocked up sell-out runs in New York and Los Angeles. Billy Crudup stars in this one man tour de force that earned him a bucketload of awards in the US: an Outer Critics Circle Award, Off-Broadway Alliance Award, Lucille Lortel Award, Drama Desk Award and an Obie.

This is Crudup’s West End debut and the production’s UK premiere. Directed by Leigh Silverman, it’s on stage from 13th March to 11th May 2024 for a limited 9 week run.

The story follows a socially awkward Midwestern barista-turned-conman who beguiles a rich New York family under the guise of a British representative of the singer Sade. As Crudup told the San Jose News when he reprised the part at Berkeley Repertory theatre last year, “It’s part charm show, it’s part thrill ride, and then it’s a claustrophobic attack in the style of film noir.” It also happens to be very funny.

Who is starring in Harry Clarke?

Harry Clarke first turned up off-Broadway in 2017 with Billy Crudup at the helm and directed by Leigh Silverman, who will also direct the London run. 2018 saw the play staged at New York’s Minetta Lane Theatre, sponsored by Audible. Everywhere it goes, audiences love it.

Billy Crudup is an American actor who was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead for Jesus' Son. He has starred in numerous high profile movies including Almost Famous, Big Fish, and Mission: Impossible III. No stranger to the stage, he’s won numerous awards including a 2002 Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Play for The Elephant Man on Broadway and a 2005 nomination for his role as Katurian in The Pillowman.

As Crudup said, “I love London and I have loved seeing theatre in London for decades. West End theater-goers are some of the most discerning, intelligent and hungry audiences in the world. I’m grateful to be given the opportunity to share the work Leigh, David, myself and all our producers have created on the London stage.”

Who is on the Harry Clarke creative team?

The creative team includes scenic design by Alexander Dodge and costume design by Kaye Voyce. The lighting is by Alan C Edwards, with sound from Bart Fasbender. David Cale wrote the original tunes. The vocal coach is Deborah Lapidus and the dialect coaching from Deborah Hecht and Jessica Berman.
