Horrible Histories: Barmy Britain - The Best Bits description

About the Show

This is a best-of from the Horrible Histories stage series: a fast tour through Boudicca's rebellion, the Gunpowder Plot, the plague, the highwayman Dick Turpin, the body snatchers Burke and Hare and a Queen Victoria who likes a party. A small cast plays dozens of characters with songs, quick changes and audience participation throughout.

The history itself is accurate, which is the point of the series: the jokes come from the facts rather than around them. The books by Terry Deary have sold in their millions and produced a BAFTA-winning television series, and the stage shows have toured the UK and played the West End for over a decade.

Cast and Creatives

The show is based on the books by Terry Deary, illustrated by Martin Brown, and adapted for the stage by Neal Foster, who founded Birmingham Stage Company more than thirty years ago and remains its artistic director.

The piece is performed by a small ensemble who share every role between them, changing character, costume and century at speed. The company also produces the companion shows Groovy Greeks, Terrible Tudors and Ruthless Romans.

Why You Should Watch It

It is 70 minutes without an interval, recommended for ages 5 and up, and written so the adults laugh as much as the children. Book tickets for Horrible Histories: Barmy Britain - The Best Bits at the Apollo Theatre.
