About Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat is a musical comedy with lyrics by Sir Tim Rice and music by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. The show contains very little spoken content, it's almost exclusively sung, and its sheer popularity with people of every age means it's almost constantly in production across the world in theatres, schools and drama colleges. In fact by the year 2008 alone, over 20,000 schools and am-dram groups had staged it. Originating as a 15 minute piece of fun in 1968, Decca Records published it in 1969. Once Jesus Christ Superstar had hit the stage and become such a monster hit Joseph started being put on more frequently. The rest, as they say, is history.
What's the story of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat?
The story of the show is inspired by the 'coat of many colours' Bible legend of Joseph from the Book of Genesis. Joseph is the son of Jacob and one of twelve brothers. His coat of many colours, given to him by his father, makes his brothers jealous and they sell him into slavery, telling Joseph's father he'd died. Joseph is taken to Egypt and becomes a slave to the Egyptian millionaire Potiphar, whose wife fancies him. Potiphar has Joseph thrown into prison, where he interprets people's dreams. The Pharaoh hears about Joseph's talents and asks him to interpret his own. Joseph tells terrible tales of famine and terror, and the people act to prevent the disasters Joseph predicts. Back at home Joseph’s brothers are starving, and regret what they did to their brother. Joseph tests them from afar to see if they've changed their wicked ways. Does he ever get to wear his dreamcoat again?
