Martin Guerre description

Matthew Warchus' brand new production of Martin Guerre at the Old Vic is an important revival of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg's Olivier Award-winning musical. It re-imagines a fascinating true story using immersive, in the round staging so you're right in the middle of the action. This is what happened in France, during the 1500s, when a case of identity theft and deception was taken to court. It follows Bertrande Guerre as she struggles to accept or reject the man who claims to be the long-lost husband who left her years before. He says he's her other half but he's so much kinder and nicer. Is he for real?

The plot offers powerful themes of love, faith, identity and social justice. This version of the hugely popular musical comes with new lyrics and fresh folk music-inspired orchestrations to add more emotional depth and contemporary resonance. Apparently it has taken years to develop. Warchus is know and loved for his work on classics like Matilda the Musical and Groundhog Day. And there's a cracking creative team on board. Along with a book by Schönberg and Boublil, there's lyrics from Boublil, Edward Hardy, Annabel Mutale Reed, Stephen Clark and Paul Hodge. This might just be your best-ever immersive West End musical experience!
