About Next To Normal

Are you ready for ‘amazing’? This brilliant musical took to the stage at the Donmar Warehouse for its UK premiere, a fresh new production by Michael Longhurst. And it proved an instant hit, selling out and leaving audiences in tears of sadness and joy. What a ride! Now it's transferring to Wyndham's Theatre from 18th June to 21st September 2024.

Before its Off-Broadway debut, Next to Normal workshop performances won it the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Score. It opened on Broadway in April 2009, nominated for 11 Tony awards the same year and winning Best Original Score, Best Orchestration, and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley.

Next To Normal became the eighth musical to win a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2010. The Prize’s Board members called it, "a powerful rock musical that grapples with mental illness in a suburban family and expands the scope of subject matter for musicals.” In 2010 it took off on a US tour, which ended in 2011. Since then it has rarely been off the stage, loved the world over thanks to themes that affect us all, whoever we are.

What's the story of Next To Normal?

Diana Goodman is a suburban mum whose bipolar disorder is getting worse. Her son Gabe, daughter Natalie and husband Dan all take responsibility for caring for their mum when her illness gets acute. And they suffer as a result, struggling with pent-up anger, frustration and sadness.

Diana’s psychiatrist prescribes her a variety of drugs but the physical side effects are terrible, and in the meantime Dan questions his own sanity. When Diana is finally given a drug that numbs and completely rids her of her feelings, the doctor says she’s stable and she’s sent home. A rollercoaster of an experience then unfolds for the whole family as they weather the storms of anger, despair, horror and devastation, the ups and downs shot through with moments of pure, transformative joy.
