Noises Off description

About Noises Off

Theatre Royal Bath Productions has been celebrating one of the nation’s best-loved comedy plays’ 40th birthday. Well done to Noises Off, the multi-award-winning farce by Michael Frayn, for delighting audiences for four decades, with no sign of the fun fading. It’s always hilarious, always popular, and has become one of the greatest British comedies of our times.

This celebratory production stars Felicity Kendal. Directed by Lindsay Posner, it opened in Bath then took off for a UK tour including theatres in Richmond, Brighton, and Cambridge. It wowed audiences at the Phoenix Theatre earlier this year. Now it’s due at the West End’s Theatre Royal Haymarket from 27th September 2023, currently booking through to 16th December 2023. We wouldn’t be at all surprised if it extends, it’s such a popular show.

We’re selling good quality cheap tickets for Noises Off, which reveals what happens when an ill-fated touring theatre crashes its way through a farce called Nothing On. If it can go wrong, it does. The final rehearsals are a mess. The opening night is a shambles. The matinee, in a theatre in Ashton-Under-Lyme, is just as crazy and the final night’s performance in Stockton-On-Tees is catastrophic.

Prepare yourself for a feel-good meta-farce packed with timeless comedy sketches, big belly laughs, and great family entertainment.

What's the story of Noises Off?

NOISES OFF has been delighting audiences ever since it premiered at the Lyric Hammersmith in 1982, and it has been produced by amateur and professional theatre groups many, many times since then. Revealing a play within a play, it has inspired numerous comedy classics including another West End favourite, THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG, also focusing on a theatre group struggling to put on a show as everything that can possibly go wrong, does.

The characters? You’ll meet Lloyd Dallas, the director of a play-within-the-play, who is moody, sarcastic and perfectionist. Dotty Otley is an ageing TV star and a principal investor in the play. Garry Lejeune is the leading man, but he can’t finish a single sentence unless it’s actual dialogue. Brooke Ashton is a young actor who constantly loses her contact lenses, leaving her more or less blind.

The dim-witted character of Freddie Fellowes is terrified of violence and blood, Belinda Blair is a cheery person and a keen peacemaker, and Selsdon Mowbray is an elderly, half-deaf acting professional with a chequered career and a big drinking problem. They’re joined by Poppy Norton-Taylor, an over-sensitive Assistant Stage Manager and understudy, and the easily-flustered stage manager Tim Allgood.

Who is starring in Noises Off?

Joining Felicity Kendal, who stars as Dotty Otley, is Jonathan Coy as Frederick Fellows and Alexander Hanson as Lloyd Dallas. The rest of the cast will be revealed nearer the time.

Who is on the Noises Off creative team?

Directed by Lindsay Posner, whose recent Bath productions include God of Carnage, Stones in his Pockets, and She Stoops To Conquer, the creative team for this 40th Anniversary production includes Simon Higlett (Designer), Paul Pyant (Lighting Designer), Greg Clarke (Sound Designer), Will Stuart (Composer), Ruth Cooper-Brown (Movement and Fight Director), George Jibson (Associate Director), and Ginny Schiller (Casting Director).
