Oedipus (Wyndham's Theatre) description

About Oedipus at Wyndhams Theatre

Oedipus, unfortunate star of Greek mythology, is the king of Thebes. Things go totally wrong for him, his family and the city he loves when he unwittingly kills his father and marries his own mother.

This is a story starring a great man, behind whom is an equally great woman. It is election night, the word on the streets is a landslide victory, and everything is about to change. Starring the internationally renowned, multi award-winning actors Mark Strong and Lesley Manville, this ancient tragedy dating back to 496 BCE is transformed into a visceral thriller. Sophocles would be delighted.

What's the story of Oedipus at Wyndhams Theatre?

After debuting in Amsterdam in 2019 and scoring a hit at the Edinburgh Festival, Robert Icke’s interpretation of Oedipus was scheduled to debut in English in 2020. Then covid came along and the project was mothballed. Now it’s back.

Oedipus finally lands at Wyndham’s Theatre for a strictly limited season from 4th October 2021, with Mark Strong playing Oedipus and Lesley Manville replacing the original Helen Mirren as Jocasta.

Mark Strong was last seen on stage in the National Theatre’s Red Barn in 2016, another production by Icke. Lesley Manville has been working on TV’s The Crown playing Princess Margaret. Both the winners of multiple awards, they have equally good movie and TV credentials. These are actors to be reckoned with.

Who is starring in Oedipus at Wyndhams Theatre?

The best theatre tickets for Oedipus at Wyndhams Theatre introduce you to Mark Strong, whose many roles and awards reveal a very well-rounded talent. A View from the Bridge, which came with an Olivier for Best Actor in a Play and a Tony nomination, Closer, Death of a Salesman, Murmuring Judges, Napoli Milionaria, King Lear, the list goes on. His performance in Uncle Vanya at the Donmar Warehouse led to an Olivier nomination for Best Supporting Actor and The Iceman Cometh at the Almeida Theatre was a knock-out.

Lesley Manville’s work includes The Thickness of Skin and The Treatment at the Royal Court Theatre and Hess is Dead, The Plantagenets and The Man Who Came To Dinner, all for the RSC.

She delighted us in Long Day’s Journey Into Night, which gave her the year’s Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress and played a blinder of a role in Ghosts, netting her an Olivier for Best Actress and a Critics Circle Best Actress Award.
