Opening Night - A New Musical description

About Opening Night

Sheridan Smith has entertained the nation on TV, radio, screen and stage for decades. She was brilliant in Shirley Valentine, remarkable in Legally Blonde, and has appeared in many a West End stage production. Radio appearances and record releases complete the picture of a well-rounded creative spirit who has fast become a national treasure – and she’s only in her 40s.

Welcome to the world premiere of Opening Night, created by the songwriter and performer Rufus Wainwright and the multi-award winning Belgian director Ivo van Hove, who is known and loved for his off-the-wall work. Together with a crack creative team they’ve recreated a legendary cult movie from 1977, Opening Night, transforming it into a fresh new musical with a West End premiere in 2024.

What's the story of Opening Night?

Opening Night tickets bring you to a seemingly-glamorous world of Broadway. But the middle aged lead actress on this premiere production, Myrtle Gordon, is mired in mental illness and pickled in drink, traumatised by seeing an obsessive fan run over and killed outside the theatre. She keeps seeing the girl’s ghost, and it’s sending her into a rough spin. Born of tragedy and threatening the success of the show, the star’s personal turmoil forces everybody to deliver their finest ever performance.

Who is starring in Opening Night?

This is where you get the best theatre tickets for Opening Night, with the best views, at great prices. So who appears in Opening Night? Sheridan Smith is your star, and the rest of the cast will be announced nearer the time. She entertained us on TV as early as 1999 as Matilda in Dark Ages from ITV then went on to wow us in numerous beloved shows including Holby City, The Bill, The Royle Family and Gavin & Stacey.

West End stage roles shot Sheridan further into the stratosphere with 2007’s Little Shop of Horrors, 2010’s Legally Blonde, 2016’s Funny Girl, and a 2019 stint in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. A talented singer, her debut album was released in 2017 and a second album a year later. Two Oliviers, a British Academy TV Award, National TV Award and BPG Award, two International Emmy nominations and an OBE complete the picture.

As Smith said, “The chance to work with the musical genius that is Rufus Wainwright and one of the world’s greatest stage directors Ivo van Hove was a once in a life time opportunity, and quite frankly if they’d asked me to read out the back of a cereal packet I’d have been there! But, I couldn’t be more thrilled to be cast in this fantastic original musical and to play the complex and challenging character of Myrtle”.
