This is a dazzling new play from Peter Morgan, the man responsible for Netflix’s The Crown, and Frost/Nixon. Transferring to the West End for 2023, the drama is directed by the Almeida Artistic Director Rupert Goold, who thrilled audiences with Ink and Spring Awakening.
What's the story of Patriots?
Roll back time to 1991 when the Soviet Union, the old USSR, had a transitional government. As the great communist experiment steadily fell apart, every republic in the union suffered. Mikhail Gorbachev, the General Secretary of the Communist Party and President of the Soviet Union, abandoned ship. Dramatic change followed as the ex-superpower was replaced by fifteen independent nations: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and Russia itself.
This is the story of the dawning of a new Russia. In turbulent times like this some people will win, others will lose, and some will be seen as heroes... then reviled as traitors. It’s tricky. As a new generation of young oligarchs battles for control of the new Russia, the play follows the billionaire businessman Boris Berezovsky on his complex and frightening journey from the president’s inner circle to Russia’s most hated public enemy. No wonder theatre tickets for Patriots are predicted to sell out fast.
Who is starring in Patriots?
The superb BAFTA-winning actor Tom Hollander, who made a splash in starring roles in The Night Manager and Travesties, reprises his role as Boris Berezovsky, the ‘kingmaker’ who helped make Vladimir Putin the man he is today. Will Keen reprises his role as Putin and Luke Thallon plays the Russian ex-Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich. The rest of the cast will be announced nearer the time.
Who is on the Patriots creative team?
The Set Design for Patriots comes from Miriam Buether. There are two Costume Designers involved, Deborah Andrews and Miriam Buether. Lighting Design comes from Jack Knowles and the Movement Director is Polly Bennett. Sound Design is by Composer Adam Cork and Robert Sterne is the Casting Director.
