Rent description
It's a legend. Rent is thirty years old, the perfect time to resurrect a story that reverberates through the decades, just as relevant now as it ever was. This unusual rock musical revolutionised musicals with its powerful themes and bold storytelling. We meet a group of young friends, all artists of various sorts, who are living on the edge in Manhattan's East Village. They struggle to cope with poverty, they fall foul of addiction, and the AIDS epidemic is raging. It's Christmas Eve and the room-mates Mark and Roger are facing eviction. Then Tom Collins, who is HIV-positive, and Angel, a drag queen, turn up to help them.
Created by Jonathan Larson, the plot unfolds to explore themes of love, friendship, courage, resilience, and the fight for dignity when things go horribly wrong. No wonder it has been nominated for and won a basket of coveted awards including the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, has been produced in 26 different languages, and has been staged in more than fifty countries. This time around it's directed by Luke Sheppard, who delighted audiences with his work on & Juliet and Paddington The Musical,. Gaten Matarazzo from Stranger Things plays Mark to deliver an inspiring London theatre experience to remember.
