Shirley Valentine description

About Shirley Valentine

If you've ever lost yourself in the everyday and found yourself craving something better, you'll love this one-handed monologue.

This is Willy Russell's gorgeous romantic comedy, hugely popular on stage and on the silver screen, where it was transformed into a 1989 British romantic comedy-drama film directed by Lewis Gilbert and starring Pauline Collins and Tom Conti. The screenplay was by Willy Russell himself, based on his 1986 one-character play of the same title.

Now it's back in town to grace the West End with its positive themes of self-discovery and a love of life. Theatre tickets for Shirley Valentine are set to sell fast, so grab yours soon to avoid disappointment.

What's the story of Shirley Valentine?

Willy Russell's one-woman play, Shirley Valentine, follows the title character Shirley, a 42 year old Scouse woman, as she breaks out of her housewifely rut by fulfilling a secret dream and flying to Greece.

While there she finds herself alone, abandoned by the friend she travelled with. But she picks herself up, dusts herself off, and finds herself once more in the most romantic way. Shirley rediscovers everything about herself: but will she have the strength and determination to begin a fresh, confident life? Or will she go back home to cook Joe's egg and chips, talking to the kitchen wall, for the rest of her life? And can Joe change?

Who is starring in Shirley Valentine?

The Olivier Award-winning actress Sheridan Smith stars as Shirley, returning to the West End for this gorgeous show, on stage at the Duke of York's Theatre for a limited run.

The actress won Olivier Awards for her work in Legally Blonde and Flare Path. She has also wowed audiences as Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl, and as the Narrator in Joseph at the London Palladium.

Who is on the Shirley Valentine creative team?

Matthew Dunster directs Shirley Valentine. The show is designed by Paul Wills, with lighting design by Lucy Carter and sound design by Ian Dickinson for Autograph.
