Sunday in the Park with George description
About Sunday in the park with George
Sunday in the Park with George is a fine musical with wonderful music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine. It's inspired by the French impressionist painter Georges Seurat's picture, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. It won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and also won a Tony for design as well as a nomination for Best Musical. It has attracted plenty of Drama Desk Awards, the 1991 Olivier Best Musical and the 2007 Olivier for Outstanding Musical Production. It has seen several revivals and has wowed audiences ever since it was first staged.
What's the story of Sunday in the park with George?
Meet George, a fictional version of the artist Seurat. He is happy to immerse himself in his masterpieces but his great-grandson, another George and also an artist, is cynical and conflicted. As George struggles to find his artistic voice the woman, Dot, who truly loves him gets pushed aside, and at the same time the characters he paints develop lives of their own, captured on canvas. A hundred years later George and Dot's descendants, also struggling artists, battle the self-same problems of artistic ingenuity and public misunderstanding. The music is gorgeous, the truths the musical tells are universal, and the actors are exceptional.
