The Baker's Wife description

Gordon Greenberg’s production of The Baker’s Wife is in town, a gorgeous show that’s become a cult classic since it was first staged. Everyone who sees this musical raves about it. Come and see what all the fuss is about.

Olivier-nominated as Musical of the Year in 1990, with memorable music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Joseph Stein, this major revival is directed by Gordon Greenberg, who recently worked on The Heart of Rock and Roll on Broadway. It marks the first time the Menier Chocolate Factory has collaborated with Schwartz since their 2011 production of Pippin.

A dream-team West End cast

There’s an impressive West End cast on board. Lucie Jones (Wicked, Waitress) plays the Baker’s Wife, Clive Rowe (Sister Act, The Prince of Egypt) is the Baker, and Sutara Gayle plays Therese. Norman Pace (Hale and Pace, Hairspray) plays Claude and Liam Tamne (Bonnie & Clyde, Wicked) is Barnaby. Finty Williams (Angelina Ballerina, The Ocean at the End of the Lane) plays Hortense.

They’re joined by Joaquin Pedro Valdes (Death Note) as Dominique, Josefina Gabrielle (Les Miserables) as Denise, Michael Matus (Hex) as The Marquis, and David Seadon-Young (Aspects of Love) as Antoine. Plus Jack Gardner as Philippe, Mark Extance as The Teacher, Matthew Seadon-Young as Priest, and Bobbie Chambers, Hana Ichijo and Robyn Rose as the Nieces, along with Bart Lambert, David Pendlebury, and Annabelle Williams.

The music is simply ravishing, the action is vibrant and the creative team at the heart of it all is just as exciting. There’s choreography by WhatsOnStage Award winner Matt Cole, design by Paul Farnsworth, lighting by Paul Anderson, musical supervision and orchestrations by Stuart Morley, and musical direction by Dustin Conrad.

The story?

When a new baker and his young wife arrive in the village, their antics turn everyone’s lives upside down. She runs away with a handsome shepherd, he falls into a decline so deep he can’t bear to bake, and everyone’s missing their daily bread terribly. When the villagers get together to plot the couple’s reunion, more chaos ensues.
