The Great Gatsby description
F. Scott Fitzgerald's brilliant novel is having its time in the sun at the moment, with a 2025 musical version and a Broadway production preceding a brand new play for 2027. Regé-Jean Page, who thrilled us in Bridgerton and The Gray Man, plays Jay Gatsby in his first West End appearance since Bridgerton shot him to international stardom. He's also one of the producers of this tragic tale of obsession. The drama is written by Joel Horwood and Maria Aberg, with direction from Michael Longhurst, the ex-Donmar Warehouse Artistic Director. Longhurst and Page collaborated in the past to give us The History Boys, a critically acclaimed show, so you can expect magic.
The producers are Simon Friend (Melting Pot) and Page's own production company, A Mighty Stranger. This is the first time Page has appeared on the West End stage since his role in The Merchant of Venice at Shakespeare’s Globe. And the old story is as powerful as ever. You'll meet the eccentric Jay Gatsby, who is fantastically rich yet spectacularly unhappy. Desperate to rekindle his lost love with Daisy Buchanan, he and his party animal friends reveal a plot exploring the meaninglessness of wealth, social climbing, and the American Dream. As it turns out, superficial success is an empty, tragic thing.
