Welcome to Wicked, a smash hit Broadway musical by Stephen Schwartz with a book by Winnie Holzman and an outstanding theatreland reputation. It's inspired by the Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which is itself a re-hash of the brilliant novel dating back to 1900, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. It's also based on the famous classic Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie starring Judy Garland, The Wizard of Oz. Welcome to the ninth longest-running musical in the West End... ever!
What's the story of Wicked?
In the original film, Dorothy won her fight with the Wicked Witch of the West. This musical re-sets the dial to create a parallel universe, revealing the amazing tale of an unlikely yet powerful friendship between two young women who first meet when learning sorcery at Shiz University. Glinda is blonde and lovely, Elphaba is green and misunderstood. When they meet the Wonderful Wizard the girls take very different paths, Glinda seduced by power and Elphaba determined to find her own unique way.
