The History Boys description

About the Show

Alan Bennett's The History Boys takes place in a boys' grammar school in Sheffield in the 1980s. Eight sixth-formers are preparing for the Oxford and Cambridge entrance exams, and the headmaster brings in Irwin, a young supply teacher, to give them an edge. Irwin's view of history as an argument to be won puts him at odds with Hector, an eccentric English teacher who values learning for its own sake, while the boys work through friendship, sex and school politics.

The National Theatre production premiered in 2004 and transferred to the West End and Broadway, winning three Olivier Awards and six Tony Awards, including Best New Play and Best Play. It was adapted into a 2006 film. This 16-week run at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, opening on 19 April 2027, is its first West End return in 20 years.

Cast and Creatives

The play is written by Alan Bennett, author of Talking Heads, The Madness of George III and The Lady in the Van. Nicholas Hytner, Director of the National Theatre from 2003 to 2015, directs a reworking of his original staging. His credits include One Man, Two Guvnors, Giant and The Standard of Living. Olivier Award winner Bob Crowley returns as set designer.

Casting has not yet been announced. The original production starred Richard Griffiths and Frances de la Tour, who both won Tony Awards for their performances, and featured James Corden, Dominic Cooper and Russell Tovey among the boys.

Why You Should Watch It

Witty, moving and widely quoted, The History Boys is a modern classic about teaching and growing up. Book your tickets to see it at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.
