The Importance Of Being Earnest description

Oscar Wilde’s plays are just as funny as they were more than a century ago. The Importance of Being Earnest is one of the world's favourite satires, recreated once again and due back in the West End following its triumphant run at the National Theatre. Reimagined by director Max Webster, actor and singer-songwriter Olly Alexander stars as Algernon Moncrieff.

A hilarious plot and giggle-inducing dialogue

Still regarded as one of the funniest English language plays, it tells the story of two young single men. Jack Worthing is sensible and dependable on the outside but escapes from the boring countryside to London as often as he can, using a fictional little brother as an excuse to party. The wealthy playboy Algernon Moncrieff – Algy – lives in London but escapes to the countryside under a false name when he wants to avoid tedious social occasions.

The men come a cropper when they fall in love with the lovely ladies Cecily Cardew and Gwendolyn Fairfax. A stream of side-splittingly silly misunderstandings occurs, made even funnier by the outrageously snobbish Lady Bracknell and the uptight Miss Prism. Prepare to enjoy some of the wittiest dialogue in theatre.
