Exploring what happens when two tremendous egos meet and clash, it reveals the reasons behind the most famous movie star in the world working on a play so familiar everyone already knows it, and why people some back to see the same play year after year.
Showing at the Lyttelton Theatre at National Theatre, South Bank, until 15th July 2023, it transfers to the West End’s Noël Coward Theatre from 9th December to 23rd March 2024. Book early – it’s a classic in the making, very funny, and it’s in theatreland for a strictly limited 15 week run.

The story? Roll back time to 1964, when Richard Burton played Hamlet on Broadway in a modern-dress production directed by John Gielgud. Commercially, it made a fortune, running for 17 weeks and breaking records. The theatre was jammed every night. But for many of the people involved in the production, these were dark days. This is the story of what happened, inspired by ‘Letters from an Actor’ by William Redfield and ‘John Gielgud Directs Richard Burton in Hamlet’ by Richard L. Stern.

Sam Mendes directs Johnny Flynn as Burton, Mark Gatiss as Gielgud and Tuppence Middleton as Taylor.
