The Old Man & The Pool description
This is the brilliant Mike Birbiglia’s quirky coming-of-middle-age story, and it asks life’s biggest questions. Why are we here? What’s next? And what happens when the odd-looking items in the doctor’s surgery, which you’d assumed were merely decorative, actually have a function, and it involves your own fast-ageing body?
The Old Man & the Pool was originally produced by Center Theatre Group. The world premiere took place at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles during 2022, after a developmental run at Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago. Billed as suitable for anyone from twelve years old upwards, it had a series of rave reviews in the USA, playing to sold out venues. Now it’s in the West End, on stage from 12th September to 7th October 2023.
The New York Times calls this show the best comedy of the year and it should be just as popular over here, thanks to human-sized themes that eventually impact all of us. Thank goodness comedy is the best cure for life!
What's the story of The Old Man and the Pool?
Mike Birbiglia reveals hilarious tales of his experiences, including the health scare that inspired him to face his fear of a YMCA swimming pool and get healthy.
We’ll let Mike himself explain. In his words: “It’s a series of jokes and stories about life and death and mortality that add up to a single story that will hopefully make you happier about your life than you were when you walked in. Sounds like what Matilda does, right? Maybe the shows do have something in common! In closing, if you see one show this fall in the West End, see Matilda. If you can see two shows, go to Matilda and The Old Man & The Pool. It’s got my heart and soul in it. And about 1,000 jokes. See you there, my London friends.”
Who is starring in The Old Man and the Pool?
This is a one man show. As well as a respected comic, Birbiglia is also a critically acclaimed director and actor who’s responsible for a collection of great one-man hit shows, as well as movies including The Fault in Our Stars, A Man Called Otto, and Trainwreck.
