The Popinjay Cavalier description

About the Show

The Popinjay Cavalier is a comedy of deception and disguise set in 1830s Europe. Written in the manner of the classic swashbuckler, it draws on the adventure epics of stage and screen and on the old Hollywood films of the genre, citing the writings of George Bruce, Ernst Vajda and Jesse Lasky Jr. as influences.

It is the first play Quentin Tarantino has written for the stage, and his first time directing in the theatre. The production, from Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions, opens at the Phoenix Theatre on 18 March 2027. Fencers, acrobats and musicians join the acting company, and the show is recommended for ages 14 and over.

Cast and Creatives

Tarantino won the Oscar for Best Screenplay for Pulp Fiction and again for Django Unchained, and his films also include Reservoir Dogs, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, Inglourious Basterds and Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood. Set and costumes are by Tom Pye, lighting by Natasha Chivers, sound by Ian Dickinson and music by Tim Phillips, with fight direction by Philip d'Orleans and action co-ordination by Sam Lyon-Behan.

Sacha Baron Cohen plays the title role in his West End debut. A three-time Academy Award nominee, he created Ali G, Borat and Brüno, won two Golden Globes for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and was Oscar-nominated for playing Abbie Hoffman in The Trial of the Chicago 7. Further casting is to be announced.
