About the Show
Michel and Alice are having an affair. Alice is married to Paul, Michel's best friend, and Michel is married to Laurence. Michel believes a few well-chosen lies will keep everyone content, but as the four characters' conversations twist and double back, it becomes harder to tell who is deceiving whom and how much each of them already knows.
Written by Florian Zeller, The Truth is an Olivier-nominated comedy that received its English-language premiere at the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2016. This production ran at the Apollo Theatre in 2026 and returns to the West End at the Theatre Royal Haymarket with the same four actors, ahead of a UK tour to Brighton, Salford, Birmingham and Glasgow. The running time is approximately 90 minutes with no interval.
Cast and Creatives
Florian Zeller is the Oscar-winning writer of The Father, The Mother and The Son. The English version is by Christopher Hampton, author of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, who shared the Academy Award for the screenplay of The Father with Zeller. Lindsay Posner directs, having also staged the play's 2016 London premiere. Set and costumes are by Lizzie Clachan, lighting by Richard Howell and sound by Adam Cork. The producers are Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska for Melting Pot, in association with Len Blavatnik and Danny Cohen for Access Entertainment, Gavin Kalin Productions, Fiery Dragons and Keren Misgav.
Stephen Mangan, a Tony Award nominee for The Norman Conquests and known on television for Episodes and The Split, plays Michel. Ardal O'Hanlon (Father Ted, My Hero) plays Paul, Sarah Hadland (Miranda, The Job Lot) plays Alice, and double Olivier Award winner Janie Dee plays Laurence.
