The Unfriend description

About The Unfriend

The Unfriend has already enjoyed an auspicious start in the shape of a smash hit run at the Chichester Festival Theatre, where it sold out night after night. The reaction and the reviews were so good it’s receiving a second run in London's West End. The Unfriend will be on stage in London for a strictly limited season at the Wyndham's Theatre from 16 December 2023 to 9 March 2024.

This is a madcap black comedy from the writer Steven Moffat and director Mark Gatiss, the award-winning duo who created the BBC’s Sherlock series. The show comes with a five star review from What’s On Stage and has also been awarded four stars by The Daily Telegraph, Sunday Times, The Guardian, The Stage, and The i. The Daily Telegraph calls it, “Effortlessly entertaining”. The i calls it “An uproarious comedy and riotous pleasure”. Mark Lawson says it’s a “theatrical treat” and Michael Billington says it’s the “funniest new play by a British writer since Ayckbourn at his peak”. That’s what we call high praise! What's the story of The Unfriend?

What’s the story? Meet Pete and Debbie, a couple celebrating their wedding anniversary on board a cruise ship, having left their teens at home. On board they meet the widow Elsa Jean Krakowski who is a big Trump fan. Despite her dubious taste in politics she’s a nice enough lady.

Pete and Debbie do the usual polite thing, saying ‘let’s stay in touch’, then they go home thinking nothing more about it. When Elsa unexpectedly turns up on their doorstep for a visit, they go on the internet to see if they can find out more about her. And there the problems begin. Elsa is very dangerous indeed, and the kids are at serious risk.

The Unfriend looks into the Brits’ strong instinct to always be polite, even when the world is falling apart around their ears. Will Pete and Debbie bring themselves to say anything to their unwanted visitor, or will they remain terrified, trapped by their own good manners? This is a hilarious comedy exploring the psyche of a nation whose people would do almost anything to avoid being rude, even if it means giving house-room to a killer.

The Unfriend cast includes award-winning comedian and actor Lee Mack (Would I Lie To You) who will lead the cast as Peter.
