TRU description
It is December 1975, and Truman Capote is alone in his New York apartment. He is reeling from a crisis brought on by his most scandalous work, which has cost him the friendship of the elite social circle he adored. Drawn entirely from Capote's own words, TRU is a solo play that spends an evening in the writer's company as he confronts the consequences of what he has written — a funny and heartbreaking portrait of an artist at his breaking point.
Originally staged in 1989, this production comes to the Menier Chocolate Factory following a critically acclaimed run in New York earlier this year, and marks the Menier debut of Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Ferguson plays Truman Capote; he won a Tony Award for the Broadway revival of Take Me Out and is known for eleven seasons as Mitchell Pritchett in Modern Family. The play is written by Jay Presson Allen, whose screen work includes Cabaret and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, and directed by Rob Ashford, whose Olivier Award-winning productions include Anna Christie, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Parade. The designer is Paul Farnsworth.
