Charlie and The Chocolate Factory description

About the Show

Charlie Bucket lives with his parents and four grandparents in a cramped house on the edge of town, with very little to eat. When the reclusive chocolatier Willy Wonka hides five golden tickets inside his chocolate bars, promising the finders a tour of his factory, Charlie finds the last one. He and Grandpa Joe pass through the gates alongside four other children, each greedier than the last, into a world of inventions, Oompa-Loompas and consequences.

This is a new staging of the musical, created at Curve in Leicester before its transfer to the London Coliseum, where it opens in June 2027. It is the first West End revival since the original production ran at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane from 2013 to 2017. The score keeps three songs from the 1971 film alongside the stage musical's own numbers, and the production uses illusion and puppetry to bring the factory and its inventions on stage.

Cast and Creatives

The musical has a book by David Greig, music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the team behind Hairspray. It is directed by Nikolai Foster, artistic director of Curve, with choreography by Ebony Molina, set design by Leslie Travers, costumes by Katrina Lindsay, lighting by Ben Cracknell, sound by Adam Fisher, video by George Reeve, illusions by Chris Fisher and puppets by Rachael Canning.

Michael Ball plays Willy Wonka at the London Coliseum, with an alternate performer covering certain dates. He has won two Olivier Awards, for Hairspray and Sweeney Todd, and created the role of Marius in the original London production of Les Miserables.
