About the Show
It is the summer of 1963, and seventeen-year-old Frances Houseman - Baby to everyone who knows her - is spending a family holiday at Kellerman's resort in the Catskills. A late-night walk to the staff quarters shows her a kind of dancing the guests never see, and introduces her to Johnny Castle, the resort dance instructor. When Johnny is left without a partner, Baby offers to learn the routine in three weeks.
Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story on Stage follows the 1987 film closely rather than reworking it as a conventional book musical: the dialogue comes from the screenplay, the set pieces are intact, and the soundtrack is performed live, including Hungry Eyes, Hey! Baby, Do You Love Me?, She's Like the Wind, Love Is Strange and (I've Had) The Time of My Life. First staged in Australia, it has since played in London, on Broadway and in more than a dozen countries, and its first West End production at the Aldwych Theatre set a London record for advance sales before opening.
Cast and Creatives
Eleanor Bergstein wrote the screenplay for the film and adapted it for the stage herself, which is why the show reads as the film rather than a version of it. Her script remains the backbone of every staging, with live musicians and singers carrying the score alongside the dancing.
Casting for the Prince Edward Theatre has not yet been announced. The company covers Baby, Johnny Castle, Penny Johnson, Lisa Houseman, Dr Jake Houseman and Max Kellerman, together with an ensemble of dancers and the on-stage band and vocalists who perform the score.
