Jesus Christ Superstar (Theatre Royal Drury Lane) description
Jesus Christ Superstar retells the final week in the life of Jesus Christ, seen largely through the eyes of his disciple Judas Iscariot. As Jesus's following grows, so do Judas's doubts about the movement and the man at its centre, until they curdle into betrayal. Against a backdrop of political tension and personal loyalty — including Jesus's relationship with Mary Magdalene — the sung-through story moves through his arrest, trial and crucifixion, set to a driving rock score.
The rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, first heard as a concept album in 1970, remains one of musical theatre's most influential works, with a score that includes Gethsemane, I Don't Know How to Love Him and the title song Superstar. This award-winning production, which originated at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, transfers to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane after record-breaking demand for its London Palladium season. It is directed by Tim Sheader, with choreography by Olivier Award winner Drew McOnie and designs by Tom Scutt. Eurovision star Sam Ryder leads the cast as Jesus in his West End debut. The Guardian called it a "gorgeous, thrilling, heavenly musical."
