About the show
Oliver Twist is sold out of the workhouse for asking for more, escapes to London and falls in with the Artful Dodger, who brings him to Fagin and his gang of child pickpockets. Nancy shelters the boy from the violence of Bill Sikes while, across the city, the family Oliver never knew is finally being traced.
Lionel Bart adapted Charles Dickens's 1838 novel for the stage in 1960, writing book, music and lyrics, and won the 1963 Tony Award for Best Original Score; the 1968 film version won the Academy Award for Best Picture. The score includes Food, Glorious Food, Consider Yourself, Where Is Love?, Oom-Pah-Pah and As Long as He Needs Me. This production, reconceived by Cameron Mackintosh, opened at the Gielgud Theatre in December 2024. It runs about two hours 40 minutes including a 20-minute interval and is recommended for ages 7 and over.
Cast and creatives
Matthew Bourne directs and choreographs, bringing the dance vocabulary of an Olivier and Tony Award-winning Swan Lake to Bart's crowd numbers, with Jean-Pierre Van Der Spuy as co-director. Lez Brotherston designs the sets and costumes, and the Olivier Award-winning lighting is by Paule Constable and Ben Jacobs.
Simon Lipkin (Guys and Dolls, Avenue Q) plays Fagin, Ava Brennan plays Nancy, Aaron Sidwell (Wicked, Henry VI) plays Bill Sikes and Aaron MacGregor is the Artful Dodger, alongside a company of young performers as Fagin's gang.
Why you should watch it
