Shrek The Musical description

About Shrek the Musical

Shrek The Musical follows the beloved green ogre everyone adores as he teams up with a cast of popular characters, including Donkey, to rescue Princess Fiona from the Dragon and defeat the evil Lord Farquaad. It’s a simple story and that’s why everyone loves it so much, from children to grown-ups. The magic is in the delightful characters, so powerful and interesting you’ll remember the experience for years to come, and the amazing stage sets, costumes and effects.

What's the story of Shrek the Musical?

Shrek the Musical is on a UK tour for several months, including the festive season. After the tour it lands at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith, on stage from 19th July to 31st August 2024 for a limited six week run.

What's the history behind Shrek the Musical? Featuring music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, the show is based on the much-loved 2001 DreamWorks animated film. After an initial season in Seattle, USA, the first Broadway version opened in late 2008, followed by a tour of the US and a refreshed London production running from 2011-2013.

The 2008 Broadway premiere was awarded 8 Tony nominations and won the Tony for Best Costume Design. The 2012 London premiere had 4 Olivier nominations, including Best New Musical, and Nigel Harman won Best Supporting Actor.

Who is starring in Shrek the Musical?

The star-studded UK tour cast also appears in the West End: Antony Lawrence as Shrek, perfect thanks to his great big voice, Joanne Clifton as Princess Fiona, James Gillan as Lord Farquaad, Brandon Lee Sears as Donkey, and Cherece Richards as Dragon.

Antony Lawrence’s hits include roles in The Lion King, Mary Poppins, Matilda the Musical, and We Will Rock You. Strictly Come Dancing star Joanne Clifton has appeared in The Addams Family as well as Strictly itself. Olivier-nominated James Gillan has worked on Starlight Express, the Royal Festival Hall's Peter Pan, Taboo, Tommy, and Wicked. Brandon Lee Sears’ performance as Donkey is just as awesome as his work on Dreamgirls, Come From Away, and Motown.

Who is on the Shrek the Musical creative team?

The creative team is equally prestigious, completing an impressive picture for a musical that’s well on its way to becoming a legend. The director and choreographer Nick Winston, co-director Sam Holmes, set and costume designer Philip Witcomb, lighting designer Ben Cracknell, sound designer Ben Harrison, and projection designer Nina Dunn are all at the top of their game.
