About Back To The Future
Back to the Future the movie was an instant hit, loved by millions. Now it's a stage musical with a book by Bob Gale, and show tunes by the Emmy and Grammy Award-winning Alan Silvestri and six-time Grammy Award-winner Glen Ballard.
What's the story of Back To The Future?
Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis created the original movie plot in 1980 but the project was rejected more than forty times by film studios because it wasn’t sexy enough to compete with the other hit comedies at the time. They eventually got a deal from Universal Pictures after Zemeckis directed the successful 1984 movie Romancing the Stone.
The musical has been adapted from the 1985 film Back to the Future by Zemeckis and Gale. The show features original music plus tunes from the ‘80s film including The Power of Love, Earth Angel, Johnny B. Goode and Back in Time.
The Original Cast Recording on Sony’s Masterworks Broadway label has already been streamed more than 3 million times. The show has won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical, plus four WhatsOnStage Awards, including Best New Musical, and the Broadway World Award for Best New Musical. The London and Manchester productions have been seen by millions of theatre lovers and it has broken box office records at its long-time home, the Adelphi Theatre.
The plot? Teenager Marty McFly is accidentally transported back to 1955 in a time-travelling DeLorean car invented by his eccentric friend, Dr Emmett Brown. But before he can return to 1985, his own time, Marty has to get his parents to fall in love at high school – otherwise, he’ll cease to exist.
Who is starring in Back To The Future?
Ben Joyce plays Marty McFly himself, best known for playing Frankie Valli in West End Musical Jersey Boys. Cory English plays Doctor Emmett Brown, Oliver Nicholas is George McFly and Sophie Naglik is Jennifer Parker. The cast also includes Sarah Goggin as Lorraine Baines, Jay Perry as Goldie Wilson, Jordan Pearson as Biff Tannen, Lee Ormsby as Strickland, Rhodri Watkins as Dave McFly, and Patricia Wilkins as Linda McFly.
Who is on the Back To The Future creative team?
Direction is by the Tony-winning director John Rando, of Urinetown and On The Town fame, and the design team includes sets and costumes by Tim Hatley, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, sound from Gareth Owen and video from Finn Ross. The choreography comes from Chris Bailey and the illusions from Paul Kieve.
