My Neighbour Totoro description

About My Neighbour Totoro

The legendary Royal Shakespeare Company and the talented Executive Producer Joe Hisaishi have got together to create magic. They’re pleased to announce the world premiere of Japanese creative powerhouse Studio Ghibli's My Neighbour Totoro. It’s appearing live on stage at London's Barbican this autumn, in a brilliant collaboration with Improbable and Nippon TV.

This is a fresh new adaptation by the Royal Shakespeare Company. The wonderful 1988 animated feature film by Hayao Miyazaki – who also delighted us with Spirited Away – is brought to the stage by its original composer Joe Hisaishi. And the show is penned by the playwright Tom Morton-Smith, loved for his work on Oppenheimer. Read on to find out about this gorgeous treat, designed for people of every age with a lower age limit of four.

What's the story of My Neighbour Totoro?

My Neighbour Totoro is set to play a strictly limited fifteen week season from 8th October 2022 over Christmas to 21st January 2023. It’s a lovely and very unusual coming-of-age story described as ‘enchanting’. The play explores the amazing fantasy world of childhood and takes you on a journey into the transformative power of the human imagination.

We follow two little girls as one extraordinary summer unfolds. Sisters Satsuki and Mei move to a rural area with their dad, to be closer to their mum while she recovers from an illness in a countryside convalescent hospital.

The girls gradually explore their new world, and Mei claims to come across magical creatures. She even says she’s met Totoro, the ancient protector of the forest. Her big sister Satsuki doesn't believe her at first, but both girls are soon swept away on an exciting adventure with their strange new friends. The world they discover is full of spirits, sprites, and natural wonder. It’s no surprise tickets for My Neighbour Totoro are already on so many parents’ radar for the festive season.
